LIFE GROUP QUESTIONS
Opening Question
Can you think of anyone who talks just to hear the sound of their own voice? How about someone who asks you a question but doesn’t want to hear your answer? How does that make you feel?
Understanding the Story
1. What two kinds of people is Jesus contrasting in verses 5-6? What does ostentatious prayer say about the hypocrites’ motives? How is praying in secret different?
2. What does Jesus say about the prayer of pagans in verses 7-8? Read Romans 8:26. How do these verses encourage believers in the effectiveness of their prayers?
Living the Story
1. Jesus wasn’t criticizing the physical posture or location of prayer but the motives of people’s hearts. Do you find it difficult sometimes to pray with the right motives? Discuss why.
2. The pagans think their prayers will be heard because of their length. In your prayer life, do you do anything to try and make your prayers more effective? What are the results?
3. Andrew Murray said, “Prayer is not a monologue, but dialogue. God’s voice in response to mine is its most essential part.” When you pray, are you expecting God to respond? Discuss with the group how you might pray prayers that are more of an exchange with God.
