A native Texan, Richard graduated cum laude with a business degree from Trinity University. He also graduated with a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and received his doctorate from Fuller Seminary.  Richard met his wife, Kelly Beckham Kannwischer, at Princeton Theological Seminary.  Kelly is serving as the interim Vice President for University Advancement at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA.

Following seminary, Richard served as an Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Houston and as Senior Pastor of the Central Presbyterian Church of Summit, NJ.  In Summit, he led the 1,200 member congregation through the wake of the September 11th tragedy.  He then served as the Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio prior to coming to Newport Beach.  Richard is currently serving on the Board of Trustees for both Trinity University and Princeton Theological Seminary.  Kelly and Richard spend much of their time chasing their two precious daughters, Danica (age 7) and Ashby (age 5).  Richard’s other active pursuits include snow skiing, hiking and playing golf.
